Forms, visa applications, and expense reports often want everything in a single PDF. Most people reach for a website to merge them, which means uploading documents you'd probably rather keep private.
Your Mac can merge PDFs on its own. Here are three ways, starting with the fastest.
Method 1: Create PDF from Finder
- Select the PDFs you want to combine in Finder. You can include images too.
- Right-click and choose Quick Actions → Create PDF.
- A new combined PDF appears in the same folder.
Open the result and check the page order. If it's wrong, the easiest fix is to rename the files with numbers first (01, 02, 03…) and run it again. Our batch rename guide shows how to number a whole folder at once.
Method 2: Merge and reorder pages in Preview
Preview is the best built-in option when you need precise control over which pages go where.
- Open the first PDF in Preview, then choose File → Duplicate so the original stays untouched.
- Choose View → Thumbnails to show the page sidebar.
- Drag the other PDFs from Finder into the sidebar, dropping them where you want their pages to go. You can also use Edit → Insert → Page from File.
- Drag thumbnails up or down to reorder pages. Select one and press Delete to remove it.
- Choose File → Save or File → Export as PDF.
Merging just a few pages
Open both PDFs with thumbnails showing, then drag individual pages from one window's sidebar into the other. Only those pages are copied.
Method 3: Merge PDFs with FinderBuddy
FinderBuddy adds Merge PDFs to Finder's right-click menu. Select the files, right-click, choose FinderBuddy → Merge PDFs, and set the order you want before it combines them. The same menu can also split, compress, rotate, unlock, and password-protect PDFs.

After merging: size and privacy checks
- Check the file size. Merging scanned documents can create a very large file. If a portal rejects it, follow our guide to reducing PDF file size on Mac.
- Check for extra pages. Blank backs of scanned pages are easy to miss. Delete them in Preview's thumbnail sidebar.
- Protect sensitive files. In Preview, File → Export has an Encrypt option (under Permissions on newer macOS) to add a password before sharing.
